Grants in Action 2017-2018
EXPLORATION OF CHINESE CULTURE THROUGH ITS PHILOSOPHY & ART:
This grant provides funding for WHS Mandarin students to learn traditional Chinese writing, painting, Tai Chi and culture through the Tea Ceremony. Guest speakers will be brought in for each of the four hands-on sessions.
VIRTUAL REALITY IN SCIENCE CLASSES:

This grant provides funding for two class room sets of Google Expeditions cutting-edge virtual reality hardware and software. Students will experience immersive, virtual trips to museums and archeological sites all over the world. Also, students will have virtual learning experiences in science including observing dissections and seeing molecular-level functions, among many other applications.
VIRTUAL REALITY IN SCIENCE CLASSES: PART TWO

This grant provides funding for a classroom set of iPads and two 3D human anatomy apps, which will make learning and teaching anatomy and physiology highly visual and engaging. These virtual reality/augmented reality apps use 3D models, animations and images that students can rotate, zoom into and dissect. This collaborative, interactive learning results in a deeper understanding of the material.
UPDATING THE WSPN NEWSROOM WITH ADDITIONAL VIDEO EQUIPMENT:

This grant allows the WSPN Newsroom to update its video equipment by providing for the purchase of a video only camera, a DSLR camera, equipment that allows students to use their phones to shoot videos, as well as an SD card reader to transfer photos to phone and wireless lavalier microphones to be used with cameras. Students will learn how to use a camera to tell a story, using critical thinking, curiosity, communication and collaboration.
EMBEDDED FUSE FELLOWSHIP AT WHS:

This grant provides our in-house FUSE fellow Eva Urban partial time in her school day to focus on sharing innovative, educational “best practices” of blended and personalized learning in classrooms at WHS. Eva will work with administration and 5 faculty members from multiple departments to create cutting edge classrooms that encompass project based, tech infused, small group learning that allow our students to be their own pilots in their learning.
UPAR FOR EQUITY:

This grant provides funding for a software application that automates the process of assessing student reading levels and helps determine the best accommodations for individual students. Accommodations can be implemented quickly, promoting independence in reading. The grant also funds Snap and Read, an additional tool to help students utilize their learning strengths by providing both visual and auditory access to reading and writing assignments.
DANIEL ALARCON TO SPEAK AT WAYLAND HIGH SCHOOL:

This grant provides funding to invite Daniel Alarcon, a Peruvian-American author, to speak to all the Spanish and Journalism students at the high school. Alarcon is an assistant professor at Columbia University, host of the NPR broadcast Radio Ambulante, and an acclaimed writer.
UNDERSTANDING MICROBIOLOGY: YOGURT FERMENTATION WITH LACTOBACILLUS CULTURES:

As part of the Freshmen biology course, this grant allows students to experience and study first-hand an example of the role of “good bacteria” in micro-biology.
JEWELRY & METALWORKING CUSTOM STUDIO:
This grant provides funding for custom-built tables and other necessary equipment for the Visual Arts studio to serve the needs of the Jewelry and Metalworking students in the creation of their gorgeous works of arts. These tables will allow the installation of additional professional equipment to increase student production in this popular course at the high school.
SPECIALTY LENSES FOR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY:
This grant funds the purchase of additional specialty camera lenses for the Digital Photography class at WHS. The purchase of two telephoto and two wide angle lenses will allow students to explore the different effects achieved with these specialized lenses specifically for shooting sporting events and wildlife with the telephoto lenses and architecture or large group/family shots with the wide-angle lenses.
ESCAPE THE ROOM REVIEW ACTIVITY:

This grant is a FUN, unique, creative and active way for our High School math students (starting with College Algebra II) to work in small groups as they review for their mid-term and final exams. The students will have to work through a series of review problems to crack the code on a variety of locks. As the students continue to answer problems correctly, they will open all the locks and be able to “escape the room.”
MUSIC DIRECTOR/ACCOMPANIST FOR THE NEW COURSE, MUSICAL THEATER:
This grant provides funding for an accompanist to support a brand new WHS class, Musical Theater, which is expected to be a very popular elective for the high school students, further enriching Performing Arts choices.
WORLD PREMIERE PERFORMANCE OF COMPOSITION:

This grant provides funding for the commission of acclaimed band composer, Roger Cichy, to compose an original piece of music for the WHS Band Program. The composer will work directly with the students throughout the school year, exposing them to all stages of the creative process. The World Premiere performances of the new piece will take place at the WHS 2019 graduation ceremony and the 2019 Band Fest Concert.

This grant provides funding for a choral accompanist for all Wayland choral students. The part time position will attend before-school elementary choral sessions, and alternate weekly between WHS and WMS during the day. Additionally, the accompanist will play for final rehearsals and evening performances at all levels.
ELEVATING THE WAYLAND STUDENT PRESS NETWORK:

This grant provides funding for advancing the Wayland Student Press Network, the award-winning journalism program at the high school. The grant provides funding for a partial position for both an English teacher and a broadcast journalist to work with the students on principles of journalistic writing and interviewing techniques.
ADVANCING THE CONNECT PROGRAM:

This grant allows the Connect Program teaching team to attend the Innovation in Education conference. This conference encompasses two days of training and discussion on PBL (Project Based Learning), personalized learning, and other topics. Keynote programs include teachers from High Tech High in San Diego, the school profiled in the documentary film Most Likely to Succeed.
EXTENDING THE SCOPE OF OUR INSTRUCTIONAL REACH: HOW SCHOLASTIC PRINT MATERIALS CAN PROMOTE DEEPER LEARNING:

This grant funds the purchase of 58 subscriptions to Scope magazine to be used by the entire 6th grade as mentor texts when they learn how to write feature articles. Scope subscriptions will provide the students with high quality, relevant articles that they can use as models for their non-fiction writing. Students will also be able to study the visual characteristics that make a magazine article appealing to read.
MIRRORS AND WINDOWS: A 6TH GRADE MONTHLY:

This grant provides funding for a monthly book club for 6th graders. The book club will help bring together a diverse group of students from different homerooms and clusters and further the social, joyful aspects of independent reading. Teachers in the school community will participate as fellow readers, fostering a sense of collaboration among teachers and students.
3D PRINTER FOR 8TH GRADE SCIENCE STEM/STEAM CURRICULUM:
This grant funds the purchase of a new 3d printer for 8th grade Science courses. Students are required to build working models for astronomy and geology projects. The 3d printer supports this work while also exposing students to this exciting technology.
INTERACTIVE PROJECTOR FOR LAP ROOM:

This grant provides funding for an Interactive Projector for the LAP Room in the middle school. This projector will provide a creative and interactive way to enhance student learning for students who benefit from a tactile approach to learning. This projector will allow the students to manipulate their lessons to access the curriculum in effective and engaging way.
ENHANCING THE WMS BANDS’ SONIC CAPACITY:
This grant allows for our Middle School Bands to acquire a Baritone Saxophone, Musser Classic Chimes and a Euphonium. These exciting new instruments will enhance the sonic capabilities of our WMS bands by strengthening the low wind and percussion sections of the band, allowing them to perform higher quality, exciting and developmentally appropriate band music.
INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECT-BASED LEARNING FOR 6TH GRADE:
This grant provides funding for a group of middle school teachers from different subject areas to work over the summer to create cross-curricular projects for the 6th grade. Cross-curricular projects provide powerful learning experiences because they allow students to see the connections between what they are learning in individual classrooms and how to connect larger ideas.
INTEGRATION OF SCIENTIFIC DADA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS AND STEM/STEAM RELATED EARTH AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM:

This grant provides funding for new Vernier LabQuest equipment (interfaces, software and sensors). With the new equipment, the 6th and 8th grade science classes at WMS will be able to do advanced data collection and analysis when working on labs and classroom activities. The new Vernier equipment is wifi capable which will allow students to collect data and stream data directly to their Chromebooks for their analysis.
GLOBAL CHANGE MAKERS: PAST, PRESENT, NEAR AND FAR STUDENT MENTORS:

This grant provides funding for speaker Laura Duggan to give a Living History presentation of Lydia Maria Child as part of Happy Hollow’s Global Changemakers project. Lydia Marie Child was a Wayland resident, abolitionist, women’s rights activist, Native American rights activist, journalist and novelist.
CO-LAB: CREATING A TEACHING/LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY AND TEAMWORK:

This grant provides funding to turn a fifth-grade classroom at Happy Hollow into a co-lab with new large surface tables on wheels and cabinetry to store students’ project work and supplies. The arrangement allows and supports greater problem/project based-study, teamwork and collaboration. This one classroom will be devoted to math and STEAM teaching for group project work.
LOKER GARDEN GRANT:

This grant expands the Loker Garden to allow for additional garden beds and the creation of a walkway, making the beds more accessible for the students to work more productively in the garden. The additional beds will also increase the amount and variety of fruits and vegetables, allowing the garden to be an even bigger part of the school curriculum.
LOKER GYMNASTICS GRANT:

This grant funds the purchase of gymnasium mats at Loker to ensure students can safely participate in all fitness, gymnastics, and yoga activities. Providing proper cushioning and protection will allow students access to all activities like rope climbing, handstands, log rolls and daily exercise routines that build good life-long physical habits and improve overall health.
HEALTHY DECISION MAKING:

This grant provides funding for Loker to bring Foodplay, a nutrition media company, into the school for an engaging assembly that teaches students about healthy eating, the importance of exercise, and long term healthy decision making choices.
LOKER PERFORMANCE STAGE GRANT:
This grant provides funding for a portable stage for the gymnasium at Loker school for all-school assemblies, plays, choral and band concerts. Loker places a priority on performing arts and public speaking in educating their students. Having a portable stage will greatly enhance the professionalism of the performances, as well as enhancing the spectator experience.
PROMOTING ANTI-BULLYING THROUGH IMPORVISATION:

This grant provides funding for an assembly at Loker school which promotes anti-bullying through improvisation. The Loker School is inviting ImprovBoston to perform an anti-bullying assembly for students in all grades. Through the use of improvisation and comedy, students will be highly engaged in building their knowledge on the importance of forming positive peer relationships and how to demonstrate respect and tolerance towards one another.
SOUND SYSTEM FOR LOKER GYMNASIUM:

This grant provides funding for a new wireless sound system in the Loker School gymnasium. The Loker School community has grown so much that the group no longer fits comfortably in the cafeteria. The new sound system in the gymnasium will allow for School Meetings, concerts and other special events to take place in a venue that can accommodate the entire school community with enhanced sound quality and greater student engagement.

This grant allows for the purchase of Kinder Lab robot kits, which are an innovative way to integrate academic content with play. These robots incorporate the core principles of kindergarten curriculum with peer collaboration, problem solving coordinated with critical thinking, skill development, engineering, programming and play.
INNOVATIVE LEARNING ON THE GO:

The grant funds an Educational Coordinator for the Elementary Boston students’ afternoon bus, to provide academic and social enrichment and support. This grant also provides Kindles, learning apps and educational games for use on both morning and afternoon bus routes.
This grant provides funding for snowshoes for the Claypit Hill physical education department. This non-traditional activity will introduce students to a new physical opportunity and create a sense of belonging for those who may not consider themselves to be natural athletes. The snowshoes will also be offered to classroom teachers for lessons on nature/environment and may also be utilized in a before or after school walking program.
This grant provides funding to bring motivational speaker, Sam Drazin to all three elementary schools. Sam has Treacher Collins Syndrome, similar to Auggie, the main character in the book “Wonder,” which the students read in their classrooms. This grant also aligns with the Just Like Me program which promotes understanding and inclusivity for all.
GENDER EQUALITY AND EDUCATION:

This grant funds professional development for teachers to help them have LGBTQ inclusive classrooms. The grant also provides funds for each of the three elementary schools to purchase grade-level appropriate books that break gender stereotypes and teach children about different types of families. The books will be used to create curriculum targeted to each grade level and parent workshops to promote inclusivity in our entire community.
INNOVATIVE LEADERSHIP FOR ADMINISTRATORS:

This grant provides funds for elementary school principals and leaders to attend a conference on new and innovative leadership initiatives. This conference features keynote speakers Sal Kahn (Founder of Kahn Academy), Daniel Pink (television producer and author), and Sean Covey (President of FranklinCovey Education, Executive VP of Global Solutions, and author).
PROMOTING COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS: WAYLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS COMMUNITY BOOKSTOP:

This grant allows for all three elementary schools to create Community Bookstops in their front lobbies with the purpose of fostering conversations about diversity among our children and the community with books representing diverse races, abilities and identities for families to read together. These bookstops will support the district’s mission to raise global citizens in a changing world. Author Grace Lin will kick off the new bookstops with a presentation to all three elementary schools.

MATT DE LA PENA AUTHOR VISIT:

This grant provides funding for the acclaimed author Matt de la Pena to visit each of the three elementary schools in the spring of 2018. The author is an engaging speaker who portrays an authentic inner city Hispanic experience in his books and believes in the power of education and literature to change lives.

This grant provides funding for memberships to state and national speech and debate organizations for members of the newly formed Debate Team at WHS.
WINTER WEEK BOOK CLUB:

This grant funds the purchase of 25 copies of the book The Hate You Give for a winter week book club discussion in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the METCO program.
